The following 10 issues are critically important when creating a "successful and fully functional virtual alliance."

1. Identify emerging needs in the internal or external marketplace.

2. Everyone needs to know what each party brings to the table in the way of knowledge, skill and abilities.

3. Each parties interests must be served in some fashion or another.

4. There must be a common point of alignment, either through values or guiding principles.

5. Create expectations for each party based on due diligence and the requirements outlined in the agreement.

6. There needs to be a "virtual alliance champion" at each locus of the alliance.

7. Some form of common vision must exist to align the varied interests and agendas.

8. Technology needs to be transparent enough that it doesn't get in the way of communication.

9. A level of tolerance must exist on behalf of the alliance for cultural norms, idiosyncrasies and time perspective.

10. There MUST be enough in common whether it be desired outcome, or focus on a project that the parties can actually work together in periods of conflict and dissonance!
