1. What are the qualities your friends compliment in you?

Ask yourself how you can abstract these into a career.

2. What are your hobbies?

See what things your hobbies all have in common and how you can turn them into something that pays money.

3. When you think of a vacation, what comes to mind?

Abstract the environment and get as close to it in your work as you can (i.e., classy surroundings, outdoors, variety, sitting still, relaxing, busy, downtown, homey, etc.)

4. Find 3 specific jobs in careers you know of that you could see yourself doing.

Sometimes it's hard to find 3 jobs like this but if you can't find them, you won't believe they exist.

5. If you are the person who is going to create a career like one of the ones you've identified, how will you need to change?

6. What kinds of careers make your age an asset?

7. What kind of people do you like to be around all day?

Consider co-workers as well as clientele. Or would you rather work alone?

8. What way do you like to communicate best?

Whether you prefer written or verbal communication, one-on-one or groups, talking to superiors or subordinates, using the telephone, fax, email or in person ... then find careers where your style of choice predominates.

9. Keep your mind open.

Next time you are involved in an activity you enjoy, such as seeing an opera, hiking in the hills or grooming your pet, ask yourself what it is you like about this and how you would get more of it in your career?

10. Don't listen to negative input from anyone else.

Believe in yourself and your process.
