The Hero's Journey is another way of viewing a rite of passage or personal development: adolescence, first career, sobriety, parenthood, retirement, self-peace, etc. Return with the Elixir is the twelfth and final stage of this Hero's Journey. The hero has faced his shadow and the journey comes full circle.

1. "Return with the Elixir means implementing change in your daily life and using the lessons of adventure to heal your wounds." (Christopher Vogler)

When have you been able to heal yourself?

2. Elixir means, the essential principle.

What elixirs have you personally acquired in your life?

3. Journeys sometimes take so long to complete, yet the hero is often surprised that the journey is ending "so soon."

What surprises awaited you at the end of your journey?

4. When the hero returns to the society he came from, he carries with him new integrated knowledge.

How has elixir made your life easier or harder?

5. There are a number of elixirs with which the hero can return. Elixir for the World - This knowledge or experience benefits not only the hero, but the society he originally left. The change in the hero may also change those around him.

How have you changed your society by going on the adventure?

6. Elixir of Responsibility - The hero may now take on more responsibility.

What about your journey proved to others that you could advance?

7. Elixir of Love - The hero has a new understanding of love or receives it in a new way.

How has journey added to your sense of love or compassion?

8. Elixir of Tragedy - The society around the fallen hero benefits from the hero's adventure.

How has a personal failure helped others succeed?

9. WARNING: YOU CANNOT FORCE THE ELIXIR DOWN ANYONE'S THROAT!

10. By pursuing and completing an adventure, we have a deeper knowledge of ourselves.

"Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else." -- Judy Garland
