The Top 10 Questions on Justice

Usually when one speaks of justice, it is from the perspective of having been wronged. When one has perceived an injustice, he/she is often emotionally affected. Justice is often tied to revenge in this regard. There is a strong belief in what is right (or often said what is "fair"). There are many black and white categories under the blind eyes of justice: right/wrong, correct/incorrect, good/evil, fair/unfair - for justice has only two plates on her scale.

Maat, the Egyptian goddess of justice, decides the afterlife fate of a soul by weighing the person's heart next to the feather of truth. If the heart is balanced with the lightness of the feather, the person is welcomed to join a banquet with deities and the deceased. If the heart is heavier than the feather, the goddess of the underworld (Ahemait) devours the person.

What does it mean to live a life of justice - to be a just person? And if the reason we spiritual beings choose a physical existence is to learn the physical consequences of our thoughts and actions, then shouldn't mistakes and "bad" decisions be embraced as part of a full learning process? What do you believe? You are invited to take a moment to reflect on the following questions:

1. How would you change the way you live if you knew the only one to judge your life after death would be you?

2. What causes your heart to be heavy?

3. What lightens you?

4. What happens after justice has been weighed in your life?

5. What causes injustice?

6. Why do punishments and rewards exist?

7. What enables you to forgive?

8. Does the way you forgive others vs. yourself differ? How?

9. What do you need to act from integrity?

10. What does right livelihood mean to you?
